Steam vs Backpack.tf Prices for TF2 Trade-Ups
The same contract can show different returns on Steam and backpack.tf because the market, currency, fees and available orders differ. Choose a consistent pricing basis for the whole calculation.
Backpack.tf: keys and refined, asks in and bids out
Our backpack.tf model prices inputs from eligible clean bot sell listings and values outputs against eligible clean bot buy orders. It filters out unsuitable attribute-specific listings rather than assuming a painted or spelled buy order accepts an ordinary item.
A snapshot records what the data source observed. It does not reserve inventory, verify every trade offer in advance, or guarantee the seller is still available. Check the individual listings, including whether enough copies exist to build the contract.
Steam Market: input asking prices and net output proceeds
Steam mode uses exact item and variant quotes. Input cost is based on asking prices; output liquidation uses buy-order proceeds after market fees. A listed selling price is not the amount the seller receives.
Fees and rounding can matter a lot for inexpensive items. Use the calculator’s after-fee output values instead of subtracting a rough percentage from every small price. Steam’s own transaction confirmation is the final check before buying or selling.
Steam Wallet balance is not cash or refined metal
Steam Market sales produce Steam Wallet funds. Those funds are not directly withdrawable from Steam to a bank account. A USD-denominated Steam balance therefore should not be treated as identical to dollars received from a separate cash marketplace.
Do not compare an input bought with keys against a Steam output without accounting for how you value and convert those currencies. The currency calculator helps compare key-market prices and spreads, but a conversion estimate does not eliminate fees or selling risk.
Use exact quotes for Strange items and wear
Strange and Non-Strange versions can have very different prices. Factory New, Minimal Wear, Field-Tested, Well-Worn and Battle Scarred are separate wear conditions. War Paints and decorated weapons need an exact match, not a proxy quote from another condition.
Backpack.tf coverage can be limited for decorated items. Steam may offer a more useful exact-variant quote, but it can also have no bid, no ask, or an outdated quote. “No buy order” and “no sell listing” describe missing sides of the market, not a zero price.
Compare a contract without mixing assumptions
Load the same ten inputs, grade, Strange status and wear in each mode. Compare total cost and net EV within that mode, then inspect the age and coverage of the quotes. Switching modes can change both the cheapest input and the best-valued output.
A green ROI on one market is a reason to investigate, not proof of an arbitrage you can instantly execute. Item transfer restrictions, market access, changing quotes and listing depth may prevent an otherwise attractive result.
